« Secret Millionaire Recap: Steve Kaplan Brings Windfalls of Cash to The Windy City | Home | Tom Cruise And Katie Holmes Sleeping Apart »

July 01, 2012 11:10 PM by Gina Hall

After a bit of a hiatus, Chris Powell and “Extreme Makeover: Weightloss Edition” returns and it’s back with another contestant trying to change is life for the better. Will he make weight? Let’s find out.

Michael, from Tarpon Springs, Florida, is 28 years old and has never kissed a girl. Probably safe to assume it hasn’t gone further than that either unless he had a really weird girlfriend. But he’s lonely and he wants to find his “special someone” and have a family.  He believes his weight is the barrier because, let’s be hones, personality really only gets you so far.

Enter Chris Powell. At the first weigh in Michael comes in at a weight of 493 pounds. He hasn’t stepped on a scale in years, so it comes as a bit of a shock. He meets with Paulette Lambert, Head Nutrionist a the California Health Institute. His diet consist of one cup of carbs only 1800 calories a day.

Chris Powell takes Michael to the gym and challenges him to “fight or flight.” Michael keeps quitting and Chris tells him he’s going to walk out the door. Mike breaks down and Chris, true to his word, leaves. Michael decides to give it another go and he thinks he’s ready now.

Michael returns to his renovated home. Chris gives Michael his first goal. He has to lose 120 pounds in three months. If Michael makes weight, Michael gets a dating specialist and matchmaker.  Michael says “I just want a regular, nice goal…who is extremely hot.” You’re not shallow at all, Michael.

As Michael gets going, he starts to vomit a lot due to the hormonal changes and the exercise.  Chris also notes that Michael is not giving 100%. Enter Michael’s family. They want for Michael’s success and so they decide to lose weight with him, 500 collective pounds. That gets Michael going.

On Michael’s birthday (Day 64) he gets a new haircut and gets set up on a workout session with the WWE Divas. Michael has been a WWE fan since childhood.

After 120 days Michael loses exactly 120 pounds. He’s halfway there. Time for Chris to move out of Michael’s home. Now Michael has to lose 70 pounds and the goal is to compete in a triathlon.

Michael gets his meeting with the matchmaker who sends him off to a speed dating event. At the end of the night the matchmaker has 5 women rate Michael. On charm, he gets a 8. Sense of humor, he gets a 7. Sex appeal he gets a 3.8. Ouch.

Michael wants to lose even more weight. At Day 142, Michael’s friends set him up on a putt-putt date. Michael finally gets his first kiss!

Once Michael is with this new girlfriend he starts to slack. Chris is concerned that Michael won’t make weight. At the 6 Month Weigh-in, Michael is 14 pounds shy of making weight.

Chris challenges Michael to finish a triathlon in 5 hours. The 1.5km swim goes pretty well. The 40km bike ride goes without a hitch. The running is what gets him. Michael completes the race in a little over 4 hours! Yay, Michael!

Michael has to lose 50 more pounds, so far he has lost 47% of his original body weight. Michael meets with a doctor to see if he’s eligible for skin surgery.  The extra fatty skin is causing him back pain. Fortunately, Michael is a good candidate for the surgery.

After one year a crowd gathers in front of Michael’s place. The new Michael emerges looking so much healthier and happier. In addition, Michael’s family has lost 442 pounds. Michael now weighs a total of 238 pounds for a total loss of 255 pounds!

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition Recap: Ashley Loses It On Her 21st

« The Real Housewives Of New Jersey Recap: Cut The Cord Caroline | Home | No ‘Love In The Wild’ For Jesse Wilson And Ali Leitz »

July 08, 2012 11:15 PM by Gina Hall

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition is back with Chris Powell helping out a young cosmetology student, Ashley, who wants lose half her weight by her big 21st birthday. Ashley’s about 200 pounds overweight. She’s the only big person in her family and she’s kind of the black sheep. Can Chris help Ashley reach her goal?

Chris Powell waits behind some bushes to surprise Ashley at her 20th birthday party. A little creepy, but whatever. Ashley is thrilled. At Ashely’s first weigh-in she tops out at 323 pounds. Time to get losin’. Ashley’s has 60% body fat and Dr. Schaack tells her that’s equivalent to five water-cooler jugs of water.

Ashley’s home has been made over to help her make weight. Chris Powell challenges her to lose 80 pounds. If she does, Chris promises her an apartment with her own gym. Chris has Ashley on a 2-mile hike up to the Hollywood sign.

In addition to adding exercise, Chris makes Ashley to deal with emotional portion of what made her gain weight. Chris sets up a meeting between Ashely and her estranged father to download all her emotional issues regarding him leaving the family. The conversation doesn’t really get anywhere but Ashley seems satisfied to get it off her chest.

Ashely is also facing some issues with her immediate family during Thanksgiving. Ashley’s mom constantly snarks about the exercise equipment consuming electricity and her sisters are bringing junk food back into her life. No one seems to care if she succeeds.

Ashely goes apartment hunting but so far she hasn’t been meeting her goals. If she doesn’t make weight, she won’t get the new apartment. It doesn’t seem like her mom wants her to succeed, in fact her mom’s a real bitch. She screams and unplugs her treadmill while Ashley working out. Ashley moves into a hotel and is actually able to lose weight.

Chris sets a meeting between Ashley and her mom. But mom is still being the villain. Chris says if they can’t come to a truce, Ashley will not be able to lose the weight.

At Ashley’s first weigh-in and Ashley weighs 255. She is 12 pounds shy of her goal so she will not get the apartment AND Chris will be moving out, much to the mother’s delight.

Ashley now has to lose 50 pounds. Chris sets up a meeting with a therapist and Ashley needs it. She has to adapt to her family but not compromise herself. Her mom doesn’t improve, and maybe she’s the one that really needs therapy. Surveillance footage shows Ashley’s mother becoming more verbally abusive.

At Ashley’s 6-month weigh-in and she’s at 217 pounds 12 pounds short of her goal. But no matter, now they’re off to Hawaii. Chris and Ashly take a helicopter to hike up a volcano. But Chris is not joining Ashley. Often called a “walkabout” in Australia , this kind of challenge is meant as a rite of passage. Ashley has just a map to finish the hike. She succeeds and meets with Chris at the top. BUT, the only way to get back down is to zipline!

Ashley flips. She doesn’t think the wire will hold her weight. She’s screams the whole way down.

Back in L.A., Ashley gets some braces and finds she can actually fit her sister’s small sized clothes.

She’s still has some daddy issues to resolve and her dad barely recognizes the new her. Her father says he’s going to change. Ashley’s heard this all before, but maybe this time it’ll stick.

It’s time for a weigh in, 179 pounds! And the doctor tells her she’s an excellent candidate for skin surgery that will make her look more normal after a huge weight loss.

Finally at day 365, everyone meets in Las Vegas for Ashley’s 21st birthday. The goal after was to hit 164 pounds. The final tally is 167 pounds! After one year she’s lost a 156 pounds, a few pounds short of goal but another remarkable transformation!

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition Recap: Jacqui Loses It For Kids

« The Real Housewives Of New Jersey Recap: Cover Girl Drama | Home | American Idol Celebrates 10th Birthday »

June 10, 2012 11:15 PM by Gina Hall

This week Chris Powell’s skills are put to the test as he encounters a woman whose tragic past serves as the catalyst for her weight gain. Is Chris enough of a life coach to help this woman excise her demons? Find out in this recap of “Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition.”
We join Jacqui, 30, at 355 pounds and crying her eyes out. She’s locked herself in the bathroom and the show’s producers are pleading with her to come out. Seems Jacqui has a problem with her body image. We’d imagine that’s why she signed up for this show.

But Jacqui’s backstory goes a little deeper than just a love affair with fried foods. We are introduced to photos of Jacqui at age 13 when she was skinny and then at age 15 when she began to gain weight. What happened? A boy “attacked” her at a party at at 14. “Attacked” is apparently ABC’s euphemism for what reality show audiences can’t handle, so we have to leave it at that. But she started to use food as a comfort and a hiding mechanism, and by the time Jacqui graduated high school, she was 100 pounds overweight.

Shawn, her fire-fighter husband, is very supportive of her goal to lose weight so Chris Powell shuffles her off from Florida to Los Angeles to get started. Jacqui’s new lifestyle regimen will consist of 1500-calorie meals and 2-4 hour workouts six times a week. For her medical exam, the nurses can’t even draw blood out of her arm through the layers of fat, so they have to resort to drawing it from her foot. The doctors also talk to her about her polycystic overian disease, which has prevented her from having children. If she’s able to lose the weight, doctors say, she will likely be able to have the children she’d been wanting.

Chris starts to push Jacqui in the weight room and initially Jacqui proves to be kind of a puss. She breaks down crying. But Chris reminds her that she’s doing this for her husband, so she soldiers forth and pushes herself to the limit. She returns to Florida to find that her home has been remodeled with her own home gym. No more excuses.

Jacqui’s next challenge is to lose 90 pounds in 3 months, not safe weight loss by any standards, but this is reality TV, so what should be real about it? But if she does, she’ll win a trip to Ireland for the honeymoon she never got to enjoy with her husband. And, Chris is going to with Jacqui and Shawn to help her lose the weight, to make for one of the most awkward threesome living arrangements since “Three’s Company.” But Jacqui has now lost 62 pounds and is making progress.

In a rather cruel change up of the old exercise routine, Chris takes Jacqui to the theater. She loves the theater, but hasn’t been as of late because the seats don’t accommodate  her size. For her work out, Chris makes Jacqui sit in every of the 300 seats in the theater. She cries, but she does it.

Ultimately, Jacqui makes weight at the end of Phase 1 at 263 pounds, she’ll be heading to Ireland soon. Top o’ the mornin’ to ya, Jacqui!

Unfortunately, Jacqui can’t keep up this reality TV thing and a full-time job at the same time. So after a discussion with her husband, she decides to quit the job with his support. He’ll even take on more work. What a guy!

The couple is rewarded with their dream trip to Ireland. Upon Jacqui’s return, she’s a little depressed to find that she’s gained 7 pounds, but is motivated to take it right back off. She’s a different woman that who we met at the beginning of the show, both in looks and attitude.

When she meets with the doctors again, they tell her that she’s fully capable of having children now so the family she’s dreamt of may now become a reality. At the end of Phase 3, Jacqui weighs in at 175 pounds, meeting her goal! She’s on her way!

At the end of the show, Chris beckons Jacqui from behind the curtain and we see a woman who has shed 207 pounds to weigh in at 148!  A huge amount of weight and a huge difference.

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition: Nyla Loses It Southern Style

« The Real Housewives Of New Jersey Recap: Lip Synching And Lip Service | Home | Aretha Franklin Wants To Replace Jennifer Lopez On American Idol! »

July 15, 2012 11:15 PM by Gina Hall

Nyla is 435 pounds and ready for a change. Mother of two young girls, Nyla was raised in Louisiana and lives in Houston and generally fries just about everything. Can Chris Powell motivate her to change in her Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition challenge? Let’s find out…

In tonight’s Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition, Nyla has a long history of weight-related issues. She started gaining back in the second grade and has been on an upward climb since then. She has an MBA but not the figure she feels she deserves for all her hard work. Is Chris Powell up for the challenge?

Nyla was abandoned at birth by her father, she never was even told about him. So Nyla’s obesity is rooted in emotional eating, which is Chris Powell’s specialty. Nyla is 300 pounds overweight and notes that she has friends who have waists skinnier than her legs.

We begin Nyla journey at a restaurant where she’s ordered 10 pounds of crawfish! But surprise, Chris Powell is there to let her know that’s her last indulgence for a while. Nyla’s initial weigh in comes in at 435 pounds. Nyla returns to her renovated house in Houston where it seems that all of her sitting spots have been replaced with exercise equipment.

Nyla’s Phase One goal is 100 pounds. If she loses, she’ll get lessons from the pros at Dancing With The Stars. But it’s really slow going. Nyla simply despises dieting. She and Chris come to blows over her determination to exercise, both start to snipe at each other.

Chris tells Nyla that he found a hidden box of pizza in the garage and he is doubtful that she’ll lose the 100 pounds. At day 90, Nyla’s lost 74 pounds. No dance lessons for Nyla.

Chris moves out and Nyla sets her own weight loss goal at 70 pounds, which is more than Chris would have given for her to lose. Thanksgving rolls around and Nyla is doing it skinny style. She bakes her turkey and is not tempted by the fats.

At the half-way point, Nyla is 50 pounds short of her own Phase Two goal. Nyla walks out on Chris and he wonders if this is the beginning of the end for her. Chris finally tells her that “breakdowns lead to breakthroughs.” Nyla says she’s broken down and it seems that they agree to move forward.

Chris decided to get to the heart of her emotional eating. He hands her the envelope containing information about her father. She finds out her father’s name  – Charles — and that he died at 54, he had committed suicide. On Day 187 and Nyla meets her dad’s family. She seems to have some closure about the ordeal.

Nyla has lost about 132 pounds. And since she’s accomplished so much Chris allows her to have the dance lesson from Tony Dovolani from Dancing With The Stars.

On Day 278 Nyla finally weighs in the 200's. But Nyla hurts her back and it will take quite a few weeks to heal. Finally at day 365 she goes for the final weigh in. Her ending weight is 278 pounds for a loss of 157 pounds. It’s pretty far from her ultimate goal, but it’s a dramatic improvement in her life. She insists that she’s now entering Phase 5. Good luck Nyla!
