ECA stack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ECA stack is a drug combination used in weight loss and as a stimulant. ECA is an initialism for ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin, with variants of it including the EC stack, which removes the aspirin for those who can not tolerate it. Dietary supplements based on or including elements of ECA were popular through the 1990s and early 2000s, but the marketing of ephedra- or ephedrine-containing stimulant combinations for weight loss and bodybuilding is now restricted or illegal in the United States, Canada and Netherlands due to reports of heart attack, stroke, and death associated with these supplements.[1][2]

While it was available as a supplement, ECA was marketed with claims that it would aid weight loss, improve athletic performance and increase "energy".

Placebo-controlled studies have consistently found ephedrine in combination with caffeine to be effective in promoting moderate fat loss in the already-obese.[3][4] Herbal supplements containing Ephedra aka Ma Huang - with or without caffeine - have similarly been demonstrated to be safe and effective in studies ranging from 8 weeks to 6 months in length.[4][5] A meta-analysis combining results from all available studies estimated average weight loss of 1 kg/month more than placebo.[6]

There is insufficient evidence to support use of ephedra for athletic performance.[7]

Natural supplements that contain ephedra (aka Ma Huang) as an ephedrine substitute have been linked to cases of heart attack, stroke, and death in healthy young adults even when taken at the labeled dosage.[8] Evidence of serious harm is based only on self-reports of uncontrolled use by supplement users; when EC has been used as medically prescribed or in controlled studies, evidence of cardiovascular risk has not been proven.[4][9]

A 2003 meta-analysis of all available studies and case reports concluded that "ephedrine- and ephedra-containing dietary supplements [...] have harms in terms of a 2- to 3-fold increase in psychiatric symptoms, autonomic symptoms, upper gastrointestinal symptoms, and heart palpitations. More serious adverse effects from ephedra use cannot be excluded at a rate less than 1.0 per thousand, and case reports raise the possibility that a causal relationship with serious adverse events may exist."[6] A more recent (2008) case-crossover study that focused on the alleged cardiovascular risks concluded that "prescription of an ephedrine/caffeine product was not associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. This was found across a wide range of patient subgroups, different cardiovascular outcomes, different assumptions about exposure, and different utilization patterns. "[9]

However, when an ephedra supplement company, Metabolife, in the USA was forced to release adverse event reports, cardiac and psychological reports were recorded in healthy young people at normal dosages.[10]

An EC formulation called Letigen which combined 20 mg of synthetic ephedrine and 200 mg of caffeine (recommended dose: 1-3 pills per day depending on user tolerance) was approved for sale by prescription in Denmark in 1990. During the peak of its use (in 1999) roughly 2% of the Danish population was using it.[9] That product's marketing was discontinued in 2002 upon the same sort of adverse reports seen in other countries but in 2008, a huge follow-up case-study failed to find any evidence of cardiovascular risk.[9]

Due to deaths linked to ephedra-containing dietary supplements and the potential use of ephedrine as a precursor in illegal methamphetamine manufacture, many countries have taken steps to regulate these products.

In the United States, it is illegal to market products containing ephedrine or ephedra alkaloids as a dietary supplement.[1] In 2004, ephedra, a botanical source of ephedrine alkaloids, was banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to serious safety concerns, injuries, and deaths linked to ephedra-containing supplements. However, ephedrine itself has never been illegal in the United States and is currently available over-the-counter. Reporting requirements and quantity limitations vary by state.[11]

In January 2002, Health Canada issued a voluntary recall of all ephedrine products containing more than 8 mg per dose, all combinations of ephedrine with other stimulants such as caffeine, and all ephedrine products marketed for weight-loss or bodybuilding indications, citing a serious risk to health.[2]

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a 2003 romantic comedy film, directed by Donald Petrie, starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. It is based on a short cartoon book of the same name by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long.

Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) is a writer who works for a magazine called Composure as the "How to..." girl. She is bored and wishes she could write more about important things, such as politics, economics, religion, poverty; stuff she actually cares about. She soon finds herself writing an article called "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". The idea comes about when Andie's friend, Michelle (Kathryn Hahn), experiences a minor breakdown after yet another break-up. Using her friend as inspiration, Andie reveals how she will actually start dating a guy and drive him away but "only using the classic mistakes women make".

At the same time, advertising executive Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) is striving for a pitch to advertise diamonds. When they question Ben's knowledge about love, Ben bets he could make any woman fall in love with him if he wanted to. If he can make any woman fall in love with him before the upcoming company ball, in just 10 days, he can head the advertising for the new diamond company.

Ben's rival co-workers, Judy Spears (Michael Michele) and Judy Green (Shalom Harlow), who were at Composure magazine earlier and are aware of Andie's new assignment, conspire to have Andie and Ben meet that night and start their quests. Fortunately, that night Andie and Ben happen to be in the same place and as Judy and Judy refer to Andie as "the blonde with the pretty smile", Ben thinks it is a done deal.

Neither Andie nor Ben reveals their true intentions. Andie works hard to make Ben break up with her in order to complete her article. However, Ben continues to stick around in hopes of making her fall in love with him. Andie goes on to get Ben knocked out at a chick flick, rapidly moves her things into his apartment, acts overly possessive and sensitive at all times, ruins boys' poker night for him and his friends, and takes him to a Celine Dion concert when he was under the assumption he was going to see a New York Knicks basketball game.

Ben stays with her despite everything, and after coming very close to breaking up they attend couples counseling, led by Andie's friend Michelle. They agree, as a solution to their "problems", to visit Ben's family in Staten Island for the weekend. While holidaying together, Ben and Andie begin to form a genuine bond, playing card games with the family, learning to ride Ben's motorcycle. Upon arrival home Ben even refers to Andie as "his girlfriend".

Andie tries to explain to boss Lana (Bebe Neuwirth) that she cannot continue writing and publishing this article as she has "really got to know this guy", but Lana remains insistent upon it. Around the same time, Andie and Ben go to the company ball together where Ben's boss, Phillip (Robert Klein), meets Andie and tells Ben that he "met her, she loves you, you win". Seeing Ben's good news, Judy and Judy are instantly envious and set about to ruin it for their co-worker. They tell his close colleagues, Tony (Adam Goldberg) and Thayer (Thomas Lennon), Andie knew about the bet all along and was playing along to help Ben win. Almost instantly, Tony and Thayer rush to Andie's side and beg her to keep quiet, when they do not realize she is still blissfully unaware. Almost simultaneously, Lana—who is unaware of Ben's role in Andie's "How To" article—reveals Andie's true intentions to Ben.

Upon learning of Ben's bet, Andie attempts to humiliate Ben by getting on stage and telling all he has prepared a "special treat": to sing a song. In an attempt to leave, Ben reveals they have prepared a "duet" and instructs his friends to not let her leave the room. They go on to sing a poor version of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", which they describe as "one of their personal favourites".

They go their separate ways before Ben is shown Andie's article and encouraged to read it. She explains in it how she "lost the one bear she ever fell for", and when he hears she quit her job at Composure and is on her way to Washington, D.C. for an interview, he chases her taxi and stops her. Once he accuses her of running away, they reveal their true feelings for each other and the film ends with Ben instructing the taxi driver to return Andie's belongings to her home, and then they kiss.

Gwyneth Paltrow was originally going to star as Andie Anderson but later pulled out before pre-production began, and Kate Hudson replaced her.[citation needed]

The yellow gown Kate Hudson wore in the movie was designed by celebrity designer Dina Bar-El.[2] The necklace she wears with the yellow gown is called, in the film, the "Isadora Diamond" named after Isadora Duncan. The 80-carat yellow diamond in the necklace was designed by Harry Winston and is worth $6 million.[3]

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days received mixed reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a score of 42% based on reviews from 146 critics, or an average score of 5/10.[4] Metacritic gave the film an average score of 45 out of 100 based on reviews from 31 critics.[5]

The film was released on February 7, 2003 and earned $23,774,850 in its first weekend. Its final gross is $105,813,373 in the US and $71,558,068 overseas.[1]

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition Recap: Jarvez

« The Great Food Truck Race Recap: Carnival Barkers In Los Angeles | Home | Kim Kardashian’s Wedding Anniversary Celebrated With A Deposition »

August 19, 2012 11:15 PM by Gina Hall

Tonight is the finale of “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition,” so what does fitness guru Chris Powell have in store for us? Meet Jarvez. Jarvez is from Portland, Oregon, he’s 28 and he’s over 500 pounds. Jarvez used to be an offensive lineman as a guard but now he isn’t moving very quickly, he can barely get out of his car. So is Jarvez up for what Chris Powell has to dish out?

Jarvez knew he was getting to big for his britches when had to call in sick to work because he had torn all of his pants and had nothing to wear. Jarvez claims that his weight gain stems from the death of his mother.

Chris Powell surprises Jarvez at work. Jarvez steps onto the scale and comes in at 548 pounds. Jarvez starts in on Chris Powell’s “Fight of Flight” workout. Jarvez pushes through, where most contestants have failed.

Jarvez returns to his home, which has been made over to make workouts and eating healthier, easier. Jarvez’s Phase One goal will be 135 pounds in three months. If he does it, Chris offers Jarvez two tickets to the Super Bowl.

Jarvez takes Chris on a pedicab tour around the city. Jarvez breaks the bike seat. But Jarvez keeps working out and eating right. Day 90 rolls around for the Phase One Weigh-in. Jarvez has lost 142 pounds, he’s going to the Super Bowl!

Now Chris will leave Jarvez and Jarvez has to continue the program on his own. His Phase Two goal will be to lose 80 pounds. In the meantime, Jarvez heads out to Super Bowl and gets to meet Green Bay Packer Ahman Green. Jarvez gets to spend a day training like an NFL player.

It comes time for the Phase Two Weigh-in. The scale needs to read 326 pounds, but he comes in at 358 pounds. But a 190 pounds in six months is pretty good.

Jarvez and his wife go on a second honeymoon in Tucson, Arizona. Chris shows up to surprise them with a bike ride. Remember that Jarvez had broken a bike seat earlier, so Jarvez refuses. Chris talks him into it though and Jarvez and the seat maintain their integrity.

It’s time for Jarvez’s Phase Three Weigh-in. He comes in at 284 pounds! He’s lost 74 pounds in the last three months which is what Chris notes is more than what most contestants lose in Phase One.

At the end of Jarvez’s year on the program it’s finally time for the moment of truth. Chris calls it one of the “greatest transformations of all-time.” He’s excited for everyone to see the new Jarvez. Jarvez steps on the scale and comes in at 267 pounds. He’s lost over 281 pounds this year and that takes him from a size 70 waist down to a size 38 waist.

When they follow up with an epilogue, Jarvez has gained 20 pounds back. But he’s working hard to keep it off, he rides the bus to work to avoid the drive-thru and he keeps active by refereeing basketball games. But he’s happy he’s lost all the weight because he’s now expecting a new baby girl. Good luck, Jarvez!

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition: Michael Loses It For Love

« Secret Millionaire Recap: Steve Kaplan Brings Windfalls of Cash to The Windy City | Home | Tom Cruise And Katie Holmes Sleeping Apart »

July 01, 2012 11:10 PM by Gina Hall

After a bit of a hiatus, Chris Powell and “Extreme Makeover: Weightloss Edition” returns and it’s back with another contestant trying to change is life for the better. Will he make weight? Let’s find out.

Michael, from Tarpon Springs, Florida, is 28 years old and has never kissed a girl. Probably safe to assume it hasn’t gone further than that either unless he had a really weird girlfriend. But he’s lonely and he wants to find his “special someone” and have a family.  He believes his weight is the barrier because, let’s be hones, personality really only gets you so far.

Enter Chris Powell. At the first weigh in Michael comes in at a weight of 493 pounds. He hasn’t stepped on a scale in years, so it comes as a bit of a shock. He meets with Paulette Lambert, Head Nutrionist a the California Health Institute. His diet consist of one cup of carbs only 1800 calories a day.

Chris Powell takes Michael to the gym and challenges him to “fight or flight.” Michael keeps quitting and Chris tells him he’s going to walk out the door. Mike breaks down and Chris, true to his word, leaves. Michael decides to give it another go and he thinks he’s ready now.

Michael returns to his renovated home. Chris gives Michael his first goal. He has to lose 120 pounds in three months. If Michael makes weight, Michael gets a dating specialist and matchmaker.  Michael says “I just want a regular, nice goal…who is extremely hot.” You’re not shallow at all, Michael.

As Michael gets going, he starts to vomit a lot due to the hormonal changes and the exercise.  Chris also notes that Michael is not giving 100%. Enter Michael’s family. They want for Michael’s success and so they decide to lose weight with him, 500 collective pounds. That gets Michael going.

On Michael’s birthday (Day 64) he gets a new haircut and gets set up on a workout session with the WWE Divas. Michael has been a WWE fan since childhood.

After 120 days Michael loses exactly 120 pounds. He’s halfway there. Time for Chris to move out of Michael’s home. Now Michael has to lose 70 pounds and the goal is to compete in a triathlon.

Michael gets his meeting with the matchmaker who sends him off to a speed dating event. At the end of the night the matchmaker has 5 women rate Michael. On charm, he gets a 8. Sense of humor, he gets a 7. Sex appeal he gets a 3.8. Ouch.

Michael wants to lose even more weight. At Day 142, Michael’s friends set him up on a putt-putt date. Michael finally gets his first kiss!

Once Michael is with this new girlfriend he starts to slack. Chris is concerned that Michael won’t make weight. At the 6 Month Weigh-in, Michael is 14 pounds shy of making weight.

Chris challenges Michael to finish a triathlon in 5 hours. The 1.5km swim goes pretty well. The 40km bike ride goes without a hitch. The running is what gets him. Michael completes the race in a little over 4 hours! Yay, Michael!

Michael has to lose 50 more pounds, so far he has lost 47% of his original body weight. Michael meets with a doctor to see if he’s eligible for skin surgery.  The extra fatty skin is causing him back pain. Fortunately, Michael is a good candidate for the surgery.

After one year a crowd gathers in front of Michael’s place. The new Michael emerges looking so much healthier and happier. In addition, Michael’s family has lost 442 pounds. Michael now weighs a total of 238 pounds for a total loss of 255 pounds!

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition Recap: Shedding For The Wedding?

« The Real Housewives of New Jersey Recap: Wait, Rosie’s Gay?! | Home | American Idol To Undergo Changes As Fox Plans To Keep The Show Around For Many Years »

June 03, 2012 11:01 PM by Gina Hall

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition rebooted for its second season and trainer Chris Powell’s has his work cut out for him. 400-pound Tony looking to shed some major poundage on the way to his 50th birthday and wedding. Is it a pipe dream or can Tony make the life-changing commitment?
Chris Powell takes on his latest weight-loss challenge with Tony, 49, who blames his work in the fast-food industry and the stresses of raising a special-needs child for helping him balloon up to 400 pounds. The show’s Dr. Terry Schaack warns Tony that his fat has primarily gathered around his abdomen, he’s at a very high risk for heart disease.

So cue the sappy generic reality-show music and let’s get started. As many of these stories start, Tony had a rough go of it during childhood, which has affected his emotional eating habits. He supported himself starting at age 14 by shoveling snow and working at a fast food restaurant. He overate at his job because “he never knew where his next meal would come from.” He would rather have food than have sex. For most of us it depends on what kind of food and what kind of sex, but still, that’s a problem.

This is the story of Tony’s year long journey toward a healthier, happier life. Or is it? Many of us freak out if we gain an extra 5-10 pounds, but having to lose almost 225? That’s a major commitment that consumes your life while not consuming an entire extra-value meal. But life doesn’t pause while you shed the weight, as Tony learns.

Chris Powell shows up in Tony’s life when Tony’s sampling wedding cakes. Now how surprised can Tony be when he has a camera crew following him? But boot camp starts right away and Tony is eager to get going. It proves hard to get 400 pounds moving on the treadmill and even harder when Tony finds out his 28-year old special-needs son is in the hospital fighting for his life.

A lot of time is spent watching this grown man cry, which was both heartbreaking and tedious. But apparently a dying son wasn’t enough to get this guy to stop filming a reality show, so I suppose that’s the dedication he needs to change.

His fiancee is reluctant to go on the journey with him. She seemed to be jealous that Tony decided to change his life without her. And now that he’s starting to drop the pounds, he starts to question his future with her. Isn’t that always the case. Lose 200 pounds, lose the bitchy girlfriend holding you back.

Tony moves out and moves on and even at the risk of becoming homeless. He even continues to eat healthy living out of his car and on friends’ couches. So for all of us losing those last few pounds, we have little excuse compared to this guy.

And it gets worse. His special-needs son dies. And he continues to film the reality show. Classy. But it’s what your son would have wanted. His death exploited for reality show tears.

Even with all this going on, Tony picks up a new girlfriend to boot. This guy has got game.

But by day 365 Tony has been transformed at the end of the year-long ordeal, Tony looks amazing at 198 pounds. A 200-pound loss to celebrate his 50th birthday. Way to go Tony. It was a weird year for all of us to watch.
